Partial Dentures Q & A

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures are removable oral prosthetics used to restore your smile to a healthy, vibrant condition. If you’ve lost one or several permanent teeth due to an injury, extractions, or decay, partial dentures provide a safe and effective way to prevent further problems like gum recession, bone loss, or movement of your remaining teeth.

Partial dentures can be used in your upper or lower jaw. They feature a wire base that connects to one or several artificial teeth. The wire base snaps into place around your existing, healthy teeth, ensuring the dentures fit snugly and don’t slip.

What are the benefits of partial dentures?

Partial dentures offer a variety of benefits, including:

  • Affordability
  • Natural appearance
  • Easy to wear
  • Improved oral health

In addition, partial dentures are easy to mold and manufacture. Restoring your smile only takes two appointments, spaced a week or two apart.

What is the process for getting partial dentures?

Getting partial dentures begins with an in-office consultation at Chauvin Family Dentistry. During your appointment, the team conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and asks about your goals for treatment. They also take oral X-rays to determine the position of your teeth and the health of your jaw.

Afterward, the team takes impressions of your mouth. They send your impressions to a dental laboratory that manufactures a custom set of partial dentures.

A week or two later, you return to Chauvin Family Dentistry. The team has you try on your partial dentures and makes adjustments as necessary.

How do I take care of partial dentures?

If you want your partial dentures to last for years to come, it’s important to clean them regularly. The team at Chauvin Family Dentistry recommends rinsing them with warm water and mild soap and brushing them gently with a soft-bristle toothbrush.

To prevent stains from collecting on your partial dentures, you may want to avoid beverages like coffee, red wine, or cranberry juice. At night, soak your partial dentures in a cleaning solution. This prevents the buildup of plaque and tartar and helps your dentures maintain their natural shape.

Visit Chauvin Family Dentistry every six months for an oral exam and professional cleaning. If your partial dentures stop fitting as well as they used to, the team can make adjustments as necessary.
