Mouth Guards Q & A

Do I need a mouthguard?

If you enjoy sports, whether as a daily pursuit or a once-in-a-while one, a mouthguard is a great investment for protecting your oral health.

Mouthguards seem like an obvious piece of protective equipment when you’re playing contact sports like hockey or football, but in many other low- or no-contact sports, they’re just as important. Some of the many sports for which you need a mouthguard include:

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • Karate
  • Biking
  • Gymnastics
  • Hockey
  • Skiing
  • Boxing
  • Wrestling
  • Skateboarding
  • Surfing
  • Water polo
  • Rugby

If you play sports on a regular or occasional basis, talk to the Chauvin Family Dentistry team about how a mouthguard can protect your oral health.

What are the advantages of a mouthguard?

Mouthguards can offer several significant advantages, including:

  • Preventing tooth breakage or loss
  • Protecting your lips, tongue, and cheeks from trauma
  • Absorbing shock from a blow to your jaw
  • Protecting braces, bridges, or other orthodontics or restorations

Mouthguards can protect your natural teeth from trauma, so you won’t need complicated and costly repairs like dental implants, dentures, or other tooth replacement options in the future.

Can an over-the-counter mouthguard work?

You can buy a mouthguard at many drugstores or sporting goods outlets, but unfortunately, those generic options offer very little protection. One-size-fits-all mouthguards tend to shift so much within your mouth that they offer minimal benefit.

Another over-the-counter option, boil-and-bite mouthguards, are slightly better. You boil them and then bite down to conform to your mouth. But, the poor quality materials in boil-and-bite mouthguards quickly lose their shape, leaving you with little mouth protection.

Custom mouthguards are different from their over-the-counter cousins. The Chauvin Family Dentistry team uses state-of-the-art technology to create a digital model of your mouth, which is used to make a high-quality mouthguard that covers your teeth comfortably.

Custom mouthguards are structurally secure, so you never have to worry about the plastic losing its shape or biting through the material. Plus, custom mouthguards allow you to speak normally and enunciate clearly, while generic ones make it hard to speak at all.

Need oral protection for sports? You can’t beat the custom mouthguards at Chauvin Family Dentistry. Call the office nearest you, or use online booking for an appointment.
