Dental Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

Crowns are high-quality porcelain tooth restorations. A crown encases a damaged tooth above the gum line to protect it.

The purpose of dental crowns is to improve tooth functionality and prevent further damage. But, crowns can also enhance a tooth’s appearance. Crowns can improve the size, shape, color of a tooth, and they look just like a natural tooth.

When would I need a crown?

Some of the many ways a crown can restore your tooth include:

  • Protecting a tooth following root canal therapy
  • Holding a cracked tooth in place to prevent breakage
  • Restoring a broken tooth
  • Restoring a worn-down tooth
  • Supporting and stabilizing a tooth with a large filling
  • Holding a replacement tooth in place as part of a dental bridge
  • Concealing a misshapen tooth
  • Concealing a badly discolored tooth
  • Replacing a tooth as part of a dental implant

In many cases, crowns are the best way to restore and save your tooth if you’re dealing with significant damage.

What does getting a crown involve?

Your Chauvin Family Dentistry provider prepares your tooth by removing some of the outer layers of enamel. This keeps the healthy part of your tooth intact.

Then, your dentist uses a high-tech intraoral scanner to generate a high-resolution image of your tooth. Your dentist then uses this image to plan a customized crown.

You’ll wear a temporary crown for a short time, usually less than two weeks. During that time, a skilled ceramic artist uses high-quality porcelain to handcraft your crown using the dentist’s precise specifications.

You’ll return to Chauvin Family Dentistry so your dentist can remove the temporary crown and then affix the new custom dental crown.

A dental bridge typically includes three crowns. The middle crown, called the pontic, replaces a missing tooth. Your dentist secures the other two crowns to the teeth on each side of the missing tooth. The process is essentially the same as for a single crown, but slightly more in-depth since it involves multiple teeth.

For single crowns, bridges, and all other forms of crowns, your dentist always checks with you and verifies that the restoration feels and looks like you want before they use dental cement to secure it.

How long will my new dental crown last?

Crowns can last for 15 years or even longer if you take good care of your teeth.

The best way to get the most from your crown is to see the Chauvin Family Dentistry team twice a year for checkups and dental cleanings. With regular care, the team can recognize problems before they progress to threaten your oral health.
